Swapping a light fitting looks like a two-screw job and mostly is — until the ceiling box turns out not to be rated for the weight of what you bought, or the wiring behind it has no ground, or there are three cables in the box and no obvious switched live. Can I have several fixtures done in one visit?
Yes, and you should. The call-out is most of the cost of a single fitting, so the second and third are much cheaper. Walk the house and list everything before you book.
My new chandelier is heavy. Does that change anything?
It can. Standard ceiling boxes are rated for a modest weight — typically around 50 lb — and anything heavier needs a braced or fan-rated box fitted, which means working above the ceiling. Tell the electrician the weight when you book so they arrive with the right box.
Can an electrician add a light where there is not one now?
Yes, but it is a different job: a circuit has to be run from a supply, a switch drop installed, and the ceiling cut and made good afterwards. Expect it to be quoted per job rather than at the per-fixture rate, and to involve a drywall repair.
