What drywall repair usually costs

$120–$400 per patch

Hole size, texture matching and the number of coats needed. Compound has to dry between coats, so a same-day finish is not always possible.

A typical US range to plan around, not a quote — every professional on Task Masters sets and publishes their own price, and you see it before you book.

What a drywall repair job normally includes

  • Cutting back to sound board and backing the hole properly
  • Patching, taping and multiple coats of compound
  • Sanding flat and feathering into the surrounding wall
  • Matching existing texture where there is one
  • Dust sheeting and clean-up

About drywall repair

Drywall repair is patching holes, cracks and water damage so that the wall reads as one flat surface again. The patching itself is quick; what takes skill is the feathering and sanding that makes the repair invisible once paint goes over it. A bad patch is visible forever under a raking light, which is why this is the job people most often call in after trying it themselves.

A single small patch typically runs $120 to $400, and larger or multiple repairs are usually quoted per job or at an hourly rate. Three things move the price: the size of the hole, whether the wall is textured, and whether the cause has been dealt with. A doorknob hole is straightforward. A ceiling stain from a leak upstairs is not a drywall job until the leak is fixed — otherwise the patch simply stains again. Matching an existing texture, especially knockdown or orange peel, is skilled work and adds to both time and cost.

Questions about drywall repair

Will the repair be painted as well?

Sometimes, and it is worth agreeing up front. Many handymen will prime and spot-paint the patch if you have the paint; a colour that has faded on the wall will still show the patch, so a full wall repaint corner-to-corner is the only way to make it genuinely invisible.

Can it be finished in one visit?

Small patches often can. Anything larger needs two or three coats of compound with drying time between them, so a proper job is frequently two visits — one to patch and coat, one to sand and finish. Be wary of a same-day promise on a big repair.

My ceiling has a brown stain. Is that a drywall job?

Not on its own. A stain means water arrived from somewhere, and until that is found and fixed the patch will stain again. Get the leak dealt with first — often a plumber or a roofer — then the drywall repair is straightforward.
