What tile installation usually costs
$8–$20 per sq ft installed
Large-format porcelain at the low end; mosaic, stone and patterned layouts at the high end. Waterproofing and substrate preparation are separate lines.
A typical US range to plan around, not a quote — every professional on Task Masters sets and publishes their own price, and you see it before you book.
What a tile installation job normally includes
- Removing existing tile and preparing the substrate
- Backer board and levelling where the surface requires it
- Waterproofing membrane in showers and wet areas
- Setting out so cuts fall sensibly and lines run true
- Tiling, grouting, and sealing where the material needs it
About tile installation
Tiling is unforgiving because it is permanent: a badly set-out wall or a bathroom without proper waterproofing behind the tile cannot be quietly corrected later. The visible skill is in the set-out — where the cuts land, whether the lines run true, how the pattern resolves in corners. The invisible skill is substrate preparation and waterproofing, which is what decides whether a shower is still sound in fifteen years.
Tile installation typically runs $8 to $20 per square foot installed, so an average bathroom floor and shower surround commonly lands between $1,500 and $4,500. The lower end is large-format porcelain on a straightforward floor; the upper end is mosaic, natural stone, herringbone patterns and small intricate areas, all of which are far more labour per square foot. Waterproofing a wet area is a separate and non-optional line — expect to see it itemised, and be suspicious of a bathroom quote that does not mention it. Substrate preparation, including backer board and levelling, is also usually extra.

Questions about tile installation
Does a shower really need a waterproof membrane?
Yes. Tile and grout are not waterproof — water passes through grout over time, and the membrane behind is what protects the structure. This is the most consequential hidden step in a bathroom, and it should appear explicitly on your quote.
Why is one tile so much more expensive to fit than another?
Labour per square foot. Large-format tiles cover ground quickly; mosaics, hexagons, herringbone and natural stone involve many more cuts, more set-out and more care, and stone often needs sealing too. The tile price and the fitting price move independently.
Can new tile go over old tile?
Sometimes on floors, if the existing tile is sound, well bonded and flat, and the extra height works with doors and thresholds. In showers it is generally a bad idea, because it buries whatever waterproofing failure may be underneath. Most tilers will recommend removing.
