Often, and it is worth asking first. A clean puncture in the central tread area can normally be plugged and patched from the inside. What cannot be repaired is a sidewall or shoulder puncture, a cut longer than about a quarter inch, or a tire that was driven on flat — those weaken the structure rather than just letting air out.

All-wheel-drive cars are the exception worth checking: several manufacturers require closely matched tread depths across all four, and mixing them can load the drivetrain.
