What AC repair usually costs
$150–$650 typical repair
Capacitors and contactors are the common, affordable failures. Compressor replacement is $1,200–$2,800 and often means replacing the system instead.
A typical US range to plan around, not a quote — every professional on Task Masters sets and publishes their own price, and you see it before you book.
What a AC repair job normally includes
- Full diagnostic across electrical, airflow and refrigerant
- Capacitor, contactor, fan motor and thermostat replacement
- Coil cleaning and condensate drain clearing
- Leak detection where refrigerant is genuinely low
- System pressures and temperature split checked before leaving
About AC repair
Air conditioning fails in a small number of recognisable ways: a system blowing warm air, one that short cycles, one that has iced over, or one that will not start at all. Most of these are capacitors, contactors, filters or airflow rather than refrigerant. That distinction matters financially, because a system genuinely low on refrigerant has a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak is money spent to be back in the same place next season.
AC repair typically runs $150 to $650 depending on the component. Capacitors, contactors and thermostats are at the affordable end and are the most common failures by a wide margin. Refrigerant leak detection and repair sits in the middle to upper part of the range, and compressor replacement is the expensive end at $1,200 to $2,800 — often the point where replacing the system makes more sense on a unit over about twelve years old. The single cheapest thing you can do before booking is change the air filter: restricted airflow causes a surprising share of "broken" air conditioners, including the iced-up ones.

Questions about AC repair
My AC is blowing warm air. What is the likely cause?
Most often a failed capacitor or contactor, a dirty filter restricting airflow, or a frozen evaporator coil. Refrigerant is a less common cause than people expect. Change the filter and check the outdoor unit is running before booking — it occasionally solves it.
Does refrigerant need topping up regularly?
No. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak, and adding more without finding it means paying again next year. Any technician who proposes a top-up without leak detection is worth questioning.
Repair or replace?
The usual test: if the repair costs more than about a third of a new system and the unit is over twelve years old, replacement generally wins — particularly on older systems using discontinued refrigerant, where parts and gas are both getting expensive.
